WoW Health’s team visited Kalam on September 17, 2022. Kalam is known for its beauty and thus is a hot spot for tourists. However, this year the outlook of Kalam was very different and our trip to the place wasn’t joyful or exciting. Our hearts were drenched in the river of sorrow as we saw the terrible condition of the once beautiful valley of Kalam. Seeing the remains of the savings of an entire generation floating in the flood water was an example of acute helplessness. Nothing could be done at that time as the damage was done, but we tried our best to accommodate the victims as much as possible.

As we crossed Bahrain, we witnessed nothing but devastation. Refrigerators were lying upside down; shops were floating in the water, and houses were broken to an unamendable extent. Words can’t describe the harm that was caused to the infrastructure due to heavy flooding. The people in the affected areas did not even have the primary facility of a road that wasn’t full of cracks, holes or gaps. It was heartbreaking yet heartwarming to see people helping each other out and placing bricks to help others pass on the road. It took us at least 6 hours on each patch of the destroyed road to move forward.

As we reached our destination, “Kalam,” we were astonished to discover that there was no electricity, telephone signals, or internet access. The place was completely disconnected from the outer world. Moreover, at the gas station, there was barely any fuel left. As the demand was high, the price of the said limited fuel was touching the skies. Furthermore, there was a lack of food supply coupled with a lack of medical facilities. There was only one hospital in the area, which also lacked the necessary facilities. In addition, there were no labs in the cities, and residents had to travel long distances to get their lab tests done. Unfortunately, even those lab results weren’t legit.

The helplessness was so genuine that when people became aware of our services at the location, they rushed toward us. It wasn’t just the flood that had done them bad, but it was also the years and years of undiagnosed illnesses. We were shocked to learn just how unaware the females of the area were about common feminine issues. Excessive childbearing was ruining their health, but illiteracy prevented them from taking any preventive actions.  Women's health was extremely bad, coupled with malnutrition and illiteracy. Our doctors and female team members spent hours helping them guide in the best manner they could. Skin diseases were also rampant in the area.

Due to heavy rains and flooding, agricultural land was severely affected too. Most of the crops were washed away, leaving just a few leftovers: cabbage, Japanese fruit, and corn. WoW Health’s Doctors checked and gave medicines to over 400+ patients within 6 hours only. Poverty issues prevented them from getting medicines themselves but thankfully, WoW Health Pakistan also provided them with free medicines. All in all, we learned that there was a dire need for doctors at the location. Flood has dragged them 20 years back.

One of the victims reported that his father, aged 85 years, claims that he has never seen such a disaster in his whole life. Since we were there, we can confirm that the situation was so poor that it would take years for them to return to stability.
